Dr. Peter Goodwin is a licensed psychologist who provides psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, couples, and families. He earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Goodwin draws from existential, relational, and narrative approaches in his work and believes that therapy is, at its heart, a collaborative and meaning-making process. He honors the healing potential of storytelling, human connection, and self-reflection within and beyond the therapy room. His approach is integrative and tailored to each individual, incorporating evidence-based practices, including cognitive-behavioral techniques, to support insight, resilience, and sustainable growth.

Peter has a special interest in working with neurodiverse clients, particularly those with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He supports clients in untangling the complexities of social interaction, deepening attunement, and building relational confidence. His work emphasizes emotional understanding and communication, helping clients strengthen their interpersonal connections while embracing their unique ways of moving through the world. Peter approaches neurodiversity from a strengths-based perspective, grounded in the belief that every person holds inherent value and meaningful contributions.

While his work is inclusive of all ages and gender identities, Peter brings particular sensitivity to the inner lives of boys and men. He provides a compassionate space to explore masculinity, identity, emotional expression, and relational dynamics. His doctoral research examined how modern cultural forces influence masculine identity, and he has presented on these topics in both academic and community settings. Peter also facilitates The Arete Center’s Men’s Group, where community and reflection foster meaningful change.

In addition, Peter provides trauma-informed care to individuals of all gender identities impacted by sexual or gender-based violence. He offers a safe, affirming environment where healing unfolds at a pace that honors each person’s needs and boundaries, ultimately opening up the possibility of living more freely, with increased self-compassion and a renewed sense of agency.

Peter also works with individuals and families connected to adoption, offering support to any member of the adoption triad: adoptees, adoptive families, and birth families. With warmth and nuance, he helps clients explore the complex emotional landscapes that can accompany adoption—grief, identity, belonging, and kinship. His approach is grounded in respect for each person’s story and attentive to the lifelong nature of adoption experiences.

Peter is also deeply experienced in working with individuals navigating issues related to addiction and substance misuse. He brings a nonjudgmental, person-centered approach to supporting those in recovery and those questioning their relationship with substances.

Outside of his clinical work, Peter enjoys gardening, camping, and exploring new places. He’s an animal lover and shares his home with a dog, a cat, chickens, ducks, and fish. In his downtime, you’ll often find him reading, making music, or listening to vinyl from his ever-growing record collection.
